The Many Faces of Lung Cancer
Those who haven’t been exposed to lung cancer survivors (thrivers!) are almost always surprised to see that we look like them. Thrivers often tell me that people look at them with shock when they find out: “But you look so good!”
The best way to bring the point home is to make it visual. A picture’s worth a thousand words and all that.
I asked people to send their photos doing something they loved along with their first name, cancer stage, and year diagnosed. Some offered a little more about themselves as well.
Response to my request for pictures has been overwhelming that we maxed out this web page and added a second. You can see more on the next tab entitled “More Faces”
How can you not smile when you look at these pictures?
Ana from Croatia says that she has a new medicine that helps with her cancer, and her name is Tara. “She’s our first grandchild and the amount of love and hope I’m receiving and giving is overwhelming.” Ana was diagnosed in May of 2020, and now Stage IV.
Leah was diagnosed December 18, 2019 with Stage IV. The tee shirt is perfect, not to mention the beautiful family.
This is Lisa, in her happy place. She was diagnosed with Stage IV in January 2014. As of July 2021: “I've been on tagrisso for almost 5 years now. I'm so thankful that I've had the blessing of time with my family and friends.”
Ellen was diagnosed in 2018, and her cancer is Stage IV.
This is Tom, Jennifer’s dad. Tom was diagnosed with Stage IV in August of 2020. This picture was taken at Saratoga National Battlefield in New York, at the start of a family tour of the lighthouses of New England. It looks like the brightest lights are already shining.
This is Lin, enjoying Christmas with her beautiful family. Lin was diagnosed March of 2019, and as of summer 2021, was stable and not in treatment.
This photo of my friend Valerie was taken about six months after her right lung (all three lobes!) was removed. She was diagnosed with Stage IIIB in November 2010, and will be celebrating eleven years with No Evidence of Disease in November 2022. Inspiring!
Don and I became buddies at my first LUNGevity conference many years ago. Here he is at a wedding outside Traverse City, Michigan with his lovely and very supportive wife Jansen. Don was diagnosed with Stage IV on September 6, 2014.
This is Carol and her husband, on their annual trip to Maui. Carol has No Evidence of Disease, and yet still made sure that she switched to a lung cancer specialist to guard against a recurrence.
It was tough choosing between the three beautiful pictures Chamaine sent, but this one captured the joy of family the best. Chamaine was diagnosed in 2017 with Stage IV, and currently has No Evidence of Disease.
While the photo of Eric and his son golfing was tempting, how could I not choose this one with his whole beautiful family in Boise? Eric was diagnosed with Stage IV in January 2019.
This photo of Lori at a Bama game says it all. She was diagnosed April 15, 2019 and has Stage IV. She adds, “On Tagrisso, walking 5 miles every day, traveling, golfing, boating and living! Thankful for the prayers from others!”
Seen here on a 2,400 mile motorcycle ride with friends “through Idaho and Montana seeing some of the prettiest country on earth,” Scott was diagnosed with Stage IV in July 2020. Pretty nice bucket list trip!
Tiffany was diagnosed with Stage IV in 2020, at the age of 52. This is her enjoying a special meal in San Francisco with a loved one.
Donna was diagnosed with Stage IV on November 15, 2020. This is her enjoying a wedding reception.
Cori made it hard to choose between two pictures , both with her thousand-watt smile. It’s contageous! She was 41 when she was diagnosed with Stage IV in July of 2020.
Diagnosed in 2014, Diane has Stage IV. She is seen here with her husband. Can you feel the love they share?
Dena loves to spend time in her backyard pool, especially when her kids and grandkids visit. She was diagnosed with Stage IV in 2013.
This picture of Joanne was taken at the wedding of a friend’s daughter. She was diagnosed in January 2020 and currently has Stage IV.
Monika from Hungary has been living with one lung since September 2015, and says, “I have a little girl, she was two at my diagnosis. So I have to be strong.” Monika has Stage IV.
Joanna was diagnosed with Stage IIB in January 2021. Here she is in her office, where she says, “I write about hope for women that have struggled with some incredibly difficult circumstances. Never thought I would join their ranks.”
Sandy has been living with Stage IV lung cancer since November 2015. It hasn’t dimmed her warmth or her smile.
This is Barbara wishing her family and friends a Happy New Year 2021. She was diagnosed in 2020, and obviously hasn’t lost her sense of humor.
Here is Lisa practicing her advocacy skills at Seaport Village in San Diego. Lisa has been living with lung cancer since March 27, 2015, and has Stage IV.
MaryClaire says she is in her happy place when she is in her Jeep in the Colorado Rockies. She was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer November 9, 2020.
